A Day on White Rock Lake: Dallas’s best kept secret

A woman sat at water’s edge basking in the golden sun, watching it fall behind the horizon. Resuming her weekly post, she watched as the water moved in a rush, lazily appreciating the view. Hand steadily outstretched, she waited. She felt the eyes of the onlookers, but simply stared ahead at the water. They still had a bit to travel, and she didn’t dare alter their course. Her arm remained steady, fingers gently resting on the green grass.
From a short distance the observers lingered, hesitant to approach the woman. Gradually they made their way across the divide, pecking at the ground as they creeped forward. It seemed they were moving in slow-motion, every step so guarded and careful.
The woman sat unflinching as they approached her perch by the water. At first, they were guarded as they warily accepted the treats in her hand. With each bite their fear dimmed, allowing them to trust the woman. Positive that she held their sole attention, she turned her head and studied them. Watching as they cleared the small pile of breadcrumbs in her palm.

From Chanel to Dior and Valentino, designer handbags can be seen hanging from SMU students’ shoulders during Saturday’s pre-game ritual on the Boulevard.

Regardless of the rainy weather and the early start time, hundreds of students, alumni, and Highland Park families flocked to the Boulevard in front of Dallas Hall before kickoff against Baylor University. Meticulously dressed in Zimmermann dresses and fresh blow-outs, girls weave in and out of fraternity tents with designer cowboy boots stomping through the mud. Hands adorned with Cartier rings and Rolex watches flicked open the tabs on seltzers and beers. The boulevard is alive with excited chatter and clinking bottles. Tailgating at SMU isn’t quite like anywhere else.

The rise, fall, and revival of Foxtrot Co.

“COMPANY SHUT DOWN. WE’RE CLOSED,” reads a small piece of cardboard taped to the front door of Foxtrot Co., located walking distance from Southern Methodist University’s campus. Formerly a favorite location for a study date, or the go-to spot for a coffee in between classes, SMU students have mourned the loss of Foxtrot Co. since its seemingly random closure last April. After facing bankruptcy, Foxtrot is determined to make a comeback.

“I expect to get a date sometime in December,” Dallas Morning News reporter Sarah Blaskovich said in an email correspondence, regarding the opening of the Snider Plaza and Knox Village locations.

It has now been confirmed that these locations will reopen to the public in early January 2025. SMU students can rest assured that Foxtrot will once again be a part of their college experience.

How Erika Kertz redefined her relationship with food and turned her dangerous habits into promising change in SMU’s dining halls

SMU has hired a new on-campus registered dietitian, Erika Kertz, to oversee the campus dining options and help support students as they navigate their relationship with food. After being diagnosed with an eating disorder in high school, Kertz, a native Texan, has dedicated her career and professional life to helping students understand the science behind food and define what it means to be healthy within an age of diet culture.

When Kertz was in middle school, she began to develop insecurities about her body and fell victim to the dangerous pattern of comparing herself to her peers. As she got older, those insecurities turned into habits. It started as small, seemingly harmless habits like weighing herself or wanting to lose a little weight. But eventually it developed into something much larger.

“I was addicted to the feeling of losing weight,” said Kertz.
